The Audi R4 Concept was supposed to fill the gap between the TT and R8. Teased at motor shows, this compact, mid-engined sports car vanished before reaching a single showroom floor.
Audi R4 Concept: Baby R8 Blueprint
Audi had already perfected the formula with the R8, which rode on a platform shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo. The R4 would have swapped that big V10 for a smaller combustion engine. Packaging would have mirrored its bigger sibling, with the engine mounted behind the cabin for balance and agility.
Volkswagen’s affordable BlueSport and a possible entry-level Porsche were expected to share the underpinnings. Still, cost worries at Volkswagen and cannibalization fears at Porsche and Audi sealed the project’s fate. Meanwhile, the e-tron brand chased practical SUVs instead, leaving enthusiasts with nothing to drive.

Why The Cancellation Still Stings
On paper, a price near the TT would have made this a genuine gateway supercar. Sports cars rarely print money, yet they generate showroom traffic and brand heat. Ultimately, the R4 needed no exotic technology, just disciplined packaging and a sensible thermal strategy.
Concept C Could Finish The Job
According to Audi, the Concept C is set to reach production as an all-electric sports car. Its curvaceous styling nods to both the TT and R8, which suggests Audi still wants a two-door halo. If it follows modern 800V architecture, fast charging could become its strongest selling point. The Audi R4 Concept deserved better than a footnote, and expect enthusiasts to treat surviving mock-ups as cult artifacts. Visit Auto News Magazine for more coverage of canceled concepts.
