The swoopy silhouette refuses to fade. Mercedes Coupe SUVs remain a cornerstone of the brand’s luxury portfolio, and despite 2024 rumors suggesting the GLC and GLE Coupes might face the chopping block, Mercedes-Benz has just confirmed they’re not going anywhere. Speaking with Motor1, Mercedes VP of Product Strategy Christoph Starzynski delivered an unambiguous message: there’s genuine demand for these sloped-roof machines.
“I see strong demand for the coupe,” Starzynski stated. “There’s a fan base for the coupe because you actually have a very, very spacious vehicle with a very, very sporty driving behavior.” That’s the coupe SUV paradox in a nutshell. You get the commanding road presence and interior volume of a traditional SUV, yet with the visual drama and dynamic character of something far more athletic.
The return of the GLE Coupe for 2027 underscores this commitment. Buyers can configure everything from the base 350 to the considerably more potent AMG 53 and AMG 63 variants, each delivering the bespoke coachbuilt precision Mercedes devotees expect. Meanwhile, the GLC Coupe and AMG GLE 53 Coupe remain in the current lineup, ensuring there’s a swoopy option at multiple price points across the luxury spectrum.
The Segment’s Staying Power
Mercedes isn’t alone in this conviction. Audi fields two coupe SUVs (the Q5 Sportback and Q8), while Porsche lets you configure virtually any Cayenne variant as a Coupe, including the electric model. BMW, Genesis, and others continue betting on the body style, proving it’s not a fleeting trend but a legitimate market segment with real enthusiast appeal.
Still, not every automaker shares that optimism. Infiniti recently discontinued the QX55 after just a few years, and Volkswagen ended ID.5 production in Europe as it restructures its EV lineup. Yet for Mercedes, the coupe SUV remains a staple, much like the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV signals the brand’s commitment to performance-oriented utility vehicles.
Why Buyers Actually Want Them
The appeal is straightforward. Coupe SUVs deliver the practicality of a traditional SUV with a more dramatic visual presence and, depending on the model, sharper handling characteristics. For luxury buyers who refuse to compromise on either space or style, it’s a compelling proposition. The sloping roofline creates an illusion of motion even when parked, while the interior remains genuinely spacious for four adults and their luggage.
Expect Mercedes Coupe SUVs to remain a fixture in Stuttgart’s lineup for years to come. The numbers don’t lie, and neither does Starzynski’s confidence. The swoopy SUV isn’t a niche oddity anymore. It’s a permanent player in the premium market.
