The Audi Q9 OLED is trying something no rival on the road can match. Instead of sitting behind a flat lens, its taillights wrap around the rear quarter panels. Audi calls it a world first, and the engineering behind it goes well beyond marketing gloss.
Audi Q9 OLED Wraps Around The Body
According to Audi, six glass panels form each lamp, and every panel is just 0.1 millimeter thick. The complete element measures one millimeter overall. Each OLED unit links to the control unit through a bus system, so hundreds of segments switch independently. Still, the glass must bend without cracking the OLED layer bonded to it, and that is the real achievement here.
On the Audi Q9 OLED, that fine control keeps the curved panels readable from the side. On paper, that matters most in parking lots and at junctions, where a flat light often vanishes at an angle. Audi says the outer panels, with 99 segments each, are the largest rear-light panels it has built. Software ambition runs deep too, as shown in Spotify’s First Native In-Car App Is Hitting Audi EVs First.

What Audi Has Not Detailed Yet
Audi pairs the lamps with digital Matrix LED headlights that can project a turn-signal pattern onto the pavement ahead. The smaller Q7 previewed that trick first. Meanwhile, the Q9 inherits it as a flagship feature.
Open questions remain, though. Audi has not said how many segments owners can customize, or whether every market gets the same startup and shutdown sequence. US pricing should emerge closer to the on-sale date.
My bet is these curved lamps become the most copied tail design of the decade. In reality, every rival engineering team will be studying those six glass panels. Expect the Q9 to set the lighting benchmark for flagship SUVs, even if the sequencing details stay under wraps for now.
