The McLaren comeback plan has been murky since the automaker’s sale in 2024. Few concrete details have surfaced under new leadership, and enthusiasts are starved for answers. That silence should end soon.
Speaking with Autocar, CEO Nick Collins said the company will “start to unpack” its plans later this summer. Those plans reportedly include an all-new lineup of combustion sports cars and a long-expected SUV. The timing lines up with the start of W1 deliveries, which Collins says will open the door to showing new product. Rivals are also rethinking their sports car ranges, as seen in the Porsche EV platform strategy now reshaping the segment.
The McLaren comeback plan takes shape
McLaren has already committed to developing new combustion sports cars. A successor to the aging 750S is the logical first step. Its statement last April also promised expansion into “new product categories,” which hints at a broader lineup than the brand has offered before.
Honestly, the 750S successor matters more than any SUV. A driver-focused coupe needs a lightweight structure, precise steering, and a throttle that responds without hesitation. Tell me it weighs less, and I will listen.
Where the P47 SUV Fits
A November report points to a five-seat hybrid codenamed P47, with proportions similar to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Commercially, an SUV makes sense. Still, chassis composure over mid-corner kerbs is where my skepticism lives.
On the electric front, McLaren is in no hurry. Collins said an EV will arrive “when our customers want one,” which suggests the company is listening to buyers rather than chasing headlines. For now, petrol and hybrid remain the priority.
A Reset Worth Watching
With new ownership and fresh investment, McLaren finally has the resources to execute. Ultimately, the McLaren comeback plan will be judged on steering feedback, brake fade resistance, and mechanical soul, not spreadsheets. Summer cannot come soon enough.
