Geely Europe expansion is entering its most serious phase yet. According to a recent report by AUTOCAR.CO.UK, the group will reveal its first model developed specifically for European buyers next year. The Chinese brand belongs to the same group as Geely owner Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, and its European engineering base sits in Milan.
Until now, Geely has relied on a “legacy portfolio” of cars chosen from its Chinese range. Product definition director Dennis Weinel admits the book was largely written already. Even so, the brand is rewriting the final chapters, and its electrified design ambitions, previewed in the Geely Galaxy Light Concept, hint at where that styling is heading.
Milan Blueprint For Geely Europe Expansion
Weinel was blunt about the Flyme infotainment system. It shares much of its look and feel with China, which Geely does not want in Europe. A second generation, with split screens, multitasking and extendable widgets, is in development and arrives next year.
Driver assistance chimes, the so-called “bings and bongs,” have also drawn fire from press and owners. Weinel says engineers are tackling the volume, the chime signature and the trigger logic while staying within regulations. Geely Europe expansion depends on fixing these everyday irritations, because nothing frustrates a new owner faster.
Project KO11 Brings Defender Bite
Project KO11 is the most dramatic model in the pipeline. It is a localised version of the Galaxy Cruiser 4×4 launched in China, pitched against the Land Rover Defender. Its underpinnings are shared with the forthcoming Lotus Eletre PHEV, but the brief is hardcore off-roading, with chunky styling and an 800mm wading depth to prove it.
Ten UK Cars By 2030
Geely plans ten UK cars by 2030, and its line-up will soon grow from three to five with the Monjaro PHEV and KO11. BYD followed a similar script with the Dolphin G, a European-spec PHEV supermini built in Hungary. Our prediction is simple: Geely Europe expansion will produce a Milan-built car that feels less like an import and more like a genuine European rival.
